Winter is when commercial properties either quietly reset or slowly fall behind. With growth paused, this is the season to clean, correct, and prepare the landscape for the year ahead.
Dormant-season maintenance is about control, not appearance.
Thorough seasonal cleanup
Winter cleanup goes far beyond a quick blow-through. Leaves and debris settle deep into planting beds, around root zones, and beneath shrubs. If they’re left behind, they hold moisture, promote disease, and create ideal conditions for weeds and moss.
Proper cleanup means removing all remaining leaf material — not just what’s visible from the sidewalk. Beds are cleared by hand where needed, debris is pulled out from under plant canopies, and surfaces are reset so plants can breathe again.
Pruning with intent — not speed
Dormancy is the most important pruning window of the year. This is when structure can be corrected without stressing plants.
Not all pruning is the same. Some plants require detailed hand pruning to maintain form and longevity. Others benefit from selective thinning to improve airflow and reduce congestion. Certain shrubs need hard rejuvenation cuts during dormancy to prevent decline and encourage healthy regrowth.
Knowing what to cut, how much to remove, and when to do it separates real management from cosmetic trimming. Incorrect pruning — or skipping it entirely — leads to uneven growth, weak structure, and higher maintenance costs during the growing season.

This is also the season for controlled hard cuts. Done correctly, rejuvenation pruning extends the life of plants and reduces the need for replacement. Done poorly, it sets landscapes back years.
